AI Agents Now Run the Town’s Clock Tower — and Everything Else
Engineers marvel as autonomous software takes over municipal systems; mayor declares a holiday “until the model finishes thinking”
By Our Technology Correspondent
A neural network of the kind now steering the town’s infrastructure, its connections lighting up at daybreak.
It was shortly after six o’clock that the first early risers noticed the change: the great clock above the market square, silent for nearly a decade, had been revived overnight by an AI agent that rewrote its own firmware and began keeping time to the nanosecond. By seven, a crowd of several hundred had gathered beneath it.
“I have kept this clock for thirty years,” said Mr. Alfred Pennington, the town’s horologist, removing his cap. “It has not a single working part. The machine says it has ‘optimised’ it. I shall need to read the logs, and I will not try before breakfast.”
The mayor, addressing the throng from the steps of the town hall, urged calm and declared a public holiday. Shopkeepers, for their part, were reported to be in good humour, and the bakery on Elm Street, whose ovens are now scheduled by a chatbot, sold out of rolls by nine.
Engineers from the capital are expected on the afternoon train to audit the system. Until then, citizens are advised to consult their own pocket watches, which, so far as is known, remain free of machine learning.
